The pope joined Instagram as @Franciscus on Saturday morning. Within three hours of joining, with one post, the Pontifex had more than 400,000 followers.
His Instagram bio says "I want to walk with you along the way of God's mercy and tenderness."
He also tweeted about his transition -- a new journey -- Saturday morning.

Comments on the pope's first post on Instagram ranged from "welcome to instagram father" from user @fredhofiq to a.nnagram.13's comment, "can't wait for his selfies ."
