Bircus: Brewery/circus concept comes to Ludlow

Posted

LUDLOW, Ky. -- The show is in town.

Ludlow got its first microbrewery Saturday with the opening of Bircus, a brewery/circus concept where patrons can watch performers breathe fire and balance kegs all while enjoying craft beer.

CEO Paul Miller said the concept is simple.

“You take circus, you take beer, you have Bircus,” Miller said. “Circuses make their money selling concessions. Now we have concessions.”

Matt Williams, owner of Folk School Coffee, said he is excited to have a brewery in his hometown.

“I’m excited to drink beer here. That’s the biggest thing,” Williams said. “We love drinking beer in town. It’s nice to walk home and walk around town.”

Head Brewmaster Sean Gregor said the beer is carefully crafted; even their names bear a special tie to the river city.

“Kilpatricks’ one legged Irish Stout … he was a circus attraction that would come to Ludlow,” Gregor said. “He was a guy who would ride a bike, and he only had one leg.”

Bircus is looking for investors to help fund renovations of the Ludlow Theater, which is currently occupied by Circus Mojo.
