WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Two men were in critical condition Sunday morning after a crash in western Hamilton County.

Berzain Ramirez, 25, was headed south on Lawrenceburg Road shortly after midnight Saturday.

He lost control in a curve near Elizabethtown, the sheriff's office said, causing his car to slide into the northbound lane.

John Haeufle, 58, was driving north and hit Ramirez's car with his truck.

Ramirez and his passenger, Brandon Ertel, 25, were trapped. Firefighters from Whitewater and Miami townships got them out. Both men were flown to University of Cincinnati with life-threatening injuries.

Haeufle was treated at the scene and released.

The sheriff's office said Haeufle and Ertel were wearing seat belts, but Ramirez was not.

Ramirez was likely going too fast and under the influence of alcohol, the sheriff's office said.
