HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Fred Pitts ran for three touchdowns to lead home standing Wayne (3-0) to a 28-9 win over Lakota West (1-2) on Friday night in Huber Heights. This game was a rematch of a 2014 Division I regional playoff game, which Wayne also won.
Pitts scored on runs from five, 12, and 28 yards out -- all in the first half -- to stake the Warriors to a 21-2 halftime lead. The junior running back ended the evening with 176 yards on 19 carries, and he now has four rushing touchdowns on the season.
Fellow junior running back Josh Foster capped the Wayne scoring in the fourth quarter, on a three-yard carry.
The Warriors rushed for 243 yards in the win and held Lakota West to just 109 yards on the ground to help control the game. In addition, Wayne got to Firebirds’ quarterbacks four times, and senior linebacker Danyell Denson picked off Lakota West quarterback Justin Moyer.
The Firebirds’ lone touchdown came in the third quarter when Zelwyn Robinson took a Moyer pass 70 yards to the house early in the third quarter, cutting the Warriors' lead to 21-9. But three turnovers, including a fumble on the second-half kickoff, proved costly for Lakota West.
Wayne will attempt to keep its unbeaten start going when it hosts Troy next Friday, while Lakota West will open Great Miami Conference play in West Chester when it hosts Princeton.
