COLUMBUS, Ohio – With 14 Cincinnati-area high school football teams still alive in the Ohio playoffs, the focus turns to the regional semifinals this week.
Five games involve matchups between two area teams Friday night at neutral locations.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association officially announced the second-round pairings Sunday afternoon.
Home teams (higher seeds) went 83-29 and 26 of the 33 undefeated teams advanced across Ohio during the first round Nov. 3.
Of the five teams in the state that qualified for the playoffs for the first time, two have advanced to the second round, including Middletown Madison (Div. V, Region 20). Madison is making its first postseason appearance since the school opened in 1960.
Of the 18 teams that won their final regular season to jump into the top 8 of their region and qualify for the playoffs, three have advanced to the second round, including New Richmond (Div. III, Region 12).
In Division I, Region 4, St. Xavier (10-1) – the reigning state champion – plays Sycamore (9-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mason’s Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium.
The game is a rematch of the 2016 regional final in which the Bombers defeated the Aviators 35-28 in overtime at Hamilton.
The other Division I regional semifinal includes Colerain (9-2) versus Mason (9-2) at Princeton. The two Greater Miami Conference programs will play for the second time this season. Colerain defeated visiting Mason 36-10 Sept. 29.
In Division II, Region 8, La Salle (9-2) plays Sidney (10-1) at Miamisburg. The Lancers, the No. 1 seed in Region 8, are the reigning three-time state champions.
Winton Woods (10-1) plays Anderson (10-1) in the other regional semifinal. That game will be played at Lakota West.

In Division III, Region 12, New Richmond (9-2) plays Chaminade Julienne (8-3) at Monroe. The winner of that game plays either Trotwood-Madison or Dayton Dunbar in the regional final.
In Division IV, Region 16, Wyoming (11-0) plays Indian Hill (9-2) at Withrow. The Cincinnati Hills League rivals meet for the second time in three weeks. Wyoming defeated visiting Indian Hill 31-24 Oct. 27.
Clinton-Massie (10-1) plays Valley View (11-0) at Beavercreek in the other regional semifinal.
In Division V, Region 20, Reading (8-3) plays West Jefferson (10-0) at Xenia. Reading was the only No. 8 seed to defeat a No. 1 in Ohio in the first round.
Middletown Madison (9-2) plays Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (8-2) at Lakota East.
