HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- The Northern Kentucky University men's basketball team arrived back on campus to cheers from fans Wednesday afternoon.
The Norse returned from Detroit, where they won the Horizon League tournament and earned a place in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament.
NKU has been making the transition from Division II to Division I over the last four years. This was the first year they were eligible to go to the NCAA tournament, and now they are going.
"People have been asking me since last night, 'How are you feeling?' And trying to pick a word would be a disservice," senior Cole Murray said. "There's nothing I can say that can sum this up at all. It's unreal, it's surreal, it’s special. It's everything I thought it would be."
NKU wrapped up their Horizon tournament victory with a 59-53 win over Milwaukee Tuesday night.
"We had tremendous belief in this team," coach John Brannon said. "I talked about trust and believing in the outcome. We had tremendous belief."
NKU President Geoff Mearns said he was "just so proud of how our student athletes responded to the challenge and came through with a victory that is historic for our university. It was exciting."
The Norse won't know who they're playing next until Selection Sunday.
