NEW CARLISLE, Ohio -- A newspaper photographer was shot by a Clark County deputy Monday night, the newspaper reported.

The deputy shot Andy Grimm, a photographer for the New Carlisle News, who stopped to photograph a traffic stop, the New Carlisle News reported.

"He had his camera and tripod in his hands and Deputy Jake Shaw apparently mistook it for a weapon and fired, striking Andy in the side," according to the report.

Grimm said the deputy shot him without warning, according to the report.

Grimm was hospitalized and expected to be OK, the New Carlisle News wrote on Facebook. An updated post at about 3 a.m. Tuesday said Grimm "is very sore but otherwise is doing fine" and is expected to be out of the hospital on Wednesday.

The New Carlisle News' post also said, "One other thing. Please don't mean mouth the deputy. Andy (Grimm) said he doesn't want (the deputy) Jake to lose his job over this."

Clark County is located northeast of Dayton.
