CARROLLTON, Ky. – A tractor-trailer driver was killed and a passenger was seriously injured in a crash on I-71 Wednesday morning.

Jack Howard, of Robertsville, Missouri, was driving southbound near the 52 mile-marker at 5:15 a.m. when the tractor-trailer left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire, according to Kentucky State Police.

The Carroll County coroner pronounced Howard dead at the scene.

A passenger, Glennford Wiper, was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment, police said. He was listed in critical condition.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said. The investigation was ongoing.
