CINCINNATI -- Ryan Custer, the Elder High school grad who was injured Saturday during a dive into a makeshift pool, is regaining some awareness and sensation, his family said at a prayer service Wednesday.

Custer’s loved ones and supporters gathered at Our Lady of Victory to pray for his recovery, and his family spoke publicly for the first time since his injury.

"On behalf of our family we are very thankful and blessed by the outpouring of love we have received," Nick Custer, Ryan’s brother, said. "We appreciate the prayers, support and heartfelt concern shown to us over the past few days.

"Ryan wanted to tell everyone that he is so grateful for all the thoughts and prayers and that he loves you all. Thank you."

According to posts on a Facebook page about Ryan’s recovery, he had a tracheostomy Wednesday. HIs family members said they have spent time reading well-wishers' posts to him in the hospital.

"Baby steps, but will try our best to keep his spirits up," reads a Facebook post.
