NEWPORT, Ky. -- Newport on the Levee lost two restaurants in 2016, but AMC Theatres sees a bright future in the riverside property.
Levee management reported Thursday that the movie theater chain plans to invest $8 million in its Newport location during 2017 and 2018, bringing new seating, better technology and upgraded concession options to its audiences.
"It shows the faith that AMC has in Newport on the Levee," Newport on the Levee general manager Harold Dull said of the investment. "We think it's a big step; we’re very excited about it."

AMC has extended its lease on the property until 2032, according to Dull, signaling a commitment to sticking with the levee and helping boost other businesses in the area.
"Rejuvenating the life to the levee is a good cause, especially for the area," said Robert Jenkins, who caught a movie at AMC the night of the announcement. "Anything they can do to make that better would be something I’d be absolutely OK with."
According to Dull, renovations will begin at the end of 2017; the theater will still be open during that time.
