2 Edgewood High students arrested after threats

TRENTON, Ohio -- Two Edgewood High School students were arrested at school Tuesday after other students reported seeing threats from them on social media, school officials said.

School resource officers detained four students in all as soon as they arrived. The students were patted down and no weapons were found.

"As soon as they were off the bus or arrived to the school, we did not allow them to enter the school on their own. They were escorted in," Edgewood Schools Superintendent Russ Fussnecker said.

After questioning, two underclassmen - both minors - were charged with inducing panic. They have been suspended for 10 days with a recommendation for expulsion.

Other students alerted school officials after seeing their messages Monday night, Fussnecker said.

"There was nothing specific as far as 'we're going to do this to this school.' It was more a reading between the lines, but we have a zero tolerance," Fussnecker said.

He was grateful that other students sounded the alarm.

"With social media it's hard … to monitor all the activity, but we had several people stepping forward," he said.

The incident was very personal to Fussnecker, who is new in his job after serving the district for two decades as a teacher and Edgewood High principal.

"I have family at that school and whether it's my family or someone next door, these kids are going to be safe and whenever we feel there is a remote threat, we act on it," he said.

A letter about the incident has been sent to parents and posted on the district's Web site.
