UNION, Ky. -- A Florence man was found dead late Friday after his vehicle crashed into a pond.
Bryan Hammon, 50, was headed east on Mount Zion Road at about 10:48 p.m. According to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, he went off the right side into a ditch near Hempsteade Drive and continued off the road for nearly 500 feet before crashing into the water.
Another driver called 911. Witnesses said the vehicle became completely submerged.
The Union Fire Department, Boone County Water Rescue and the Northern Kentucky Technical Rescue Team responded to try to save Hammon, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This is a very peculiar situation," sheriff's Lt. Chris Hall said. "Several things…a lot of times we can narrow down somewhat quickly but this is a unique one. So we’ll have our work cut out for us on this one.”
Rescuers confirmed he was the only person in the vehicle.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is handling the investigation trying to determine why Hammon went off the road.
