COVINGTON, Ky. -- A Kenton County grand jury indicted a man Thursday in a death police had initially described as "accidental."

Marquil Jermontae Brooks, 23, is facing a charge of second-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Kelly Cocagne Aug. 14, the Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney announced Friday.

Brooks turned himself in Friday and is being held with bond set at $25,000, according to the announcement.

Cocagne, 35, was shot in the torso in her home on Holman Avenue in Covington. She was pronounced dead at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The day after the shooting, police had said they believed it was accidental and no charges were expected. Authorities didn't immediately say what had changed their minds.

Cocagne was an assistant instructor at Newport Intermediate School.

If convicted, Brooks faces 5-10 years in prison. He's scheduled for arraignment Sept. 25.
