CINCINNATI — Cheapside Cafe fans are in for a sweet treat this September, when the owners of the Downtown eatery plan to open a new ice cream parlor at 1200 Main St.

The owners of the breakfast and lunchtime cafe confirmed Tuesday their plans to open Cheapside Corner, a new venture that will make and sell ice cream, malts and milkshakes.

“It’s going to be different,” said co-owner Joe Creighton of the parlor. “It’s going to reflect the new, hip Cincinnati.”

Besides ice cream, he said music will also play a part in setting Cheapside Corner apart from other Over-the-Rhine venues and the more traditional Graeter’s shop on Vine Street. However, Creighton was unwilling to share further details about the music or any other features, saying he and his partners, Rom Wells and Jon Mouch, were still deciding significant details for the venue.

In addition to Cheapside, Creighton also opened the Rookwood in Mount Adams. He emphasized that opening an ice cream parlor, rather than another restaurant or bar in Over-the-Rhine, was a purposeful choice.

“I think it’s always been very important to us to set the trend,” Creighton said. “It’s always our goal to push the city to make it a better place.”

Landing a location in OTR was also a longtime goal for the trio, all of whom live in the neighborhood.

“We made various attempts to open something in OTR in the past that didn’t work out,” he said. “Now we finally have a place.”
