WATCH: Emmy Awards poke fun at Kim Davis

Posted

HOLLYWOOD, Ca. -- The Rowan County, Kentucky clerk jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage license is in headlines once again -- this time, she's the butt of a joke among Hollywood's elite.

Andy Samberg, this year’s host of the Emmy Awards, took a swipe at Davis Sunday during his opening monologue for the show that honors the best of television.

The joke involving Davis came as Samberg riffed on Paula Deen, who is slated to appear on “Dancing with the Stars.”

“If I wanted to see an intolerant lady dance I would have gone to one of Kim Davis’ four weddings,” Samberg said, in reference to Davis’ past marital issues.

Deen, a once popular southern television cooking host, found herself in the middle of controversy in 2013 when she admitted to using the “n” word.

Samberg wrapped up his riff on Davis by poking fun at her use of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” during a rally after she was released from jail on a contempt of court charge last month.

Backstage, Entertainment Weekly asked Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus how her character on HBO's Veep, President Selina Meyer, would react to Davis.

“I’ll tell you something,” Dreyfus said. "I think that President Meyer would find a very effective way of not expressing an opinion. Straddling the subject, so to speak. And I think she would applaud her right to not do what she did and at the same time, talk about the law being the law of the land and at the end of the day, not say one god****ed thing.”
